Our Infant Community takes children from approximately
18 months to three years of age.
We believe early childhood should be a time of fun,
warmth, security, exploring and discovery. Toddlers
are curious, creative and receptive; our staff strive
to nurture and encourage these qualities. Our aim is
to provide a child-centred, loving and enriching environment
where the child may:
• Develop a life –long love of learning
• Gain independence and self discipline
• Learn appropriate skills to move into the next
phase of learning with confidence and enthusiasm
• Learn respect for himself or herself, for other
people, objects and for the planet.
The first years of life are marked by amazing growth
in independence. We prepare the environment to assist
the very young child to create a physical and emotionally
sound foundation for him/herself. Many of the activities
that the child delights in and loves to do are called
"Practical Life" in the Montessori environment.
The child learns self-control and develops a healthy
self image by participating in real activities, such
as washing and cutting fruit, sorting grains, folding
cloths, sweeping and dusting. In our environment the
child will discover that there is a place for everything
and everything is in its place, which answers to the
need of every young child - the need for order, of both
time and place.
This is also a time that visual discrimination and hand/eye
control needs to be stimulated. The children will find
materials they love to work with ranging from simple
shapes and colours, things to put into containers, knobbed
puzzles and other materials that call for special finger
and handgrips, which indirectly prepare them for writing
and other fine muscle activities later on.
Quality and beauty is very important in the Montessori
environment because children in the early years literally
absorb the life around them in its detail.
